The Operating Theatre Company

The Operating Theatre Company (Glasgow)

The Operating Theatre Company was founded in 2002 by medical, dental and nursing students at Glasgow University in Scotland. Since then we have been joined by a number of professional doctors and dentists - bringing experience and diversity to the company. We aim to bring the general public, students and healthcare professionals alike in Scotland a high standard in theatrical entertainment.

In 2002 we staged two performances of Little Shop of Horrors in October 2002 at the James Arnott Theatre - part of Glasgow University's Gilmorehill G12 Complex. This formed part of Arts in Medicine Week - a celebration of both the contribution that healthcare students professionals can make to the arts, and the power of the arts to enrich the lives of those working in Medicine. It will also celebrated the opening of the new Medical School Building, the Medical Faculty's first permanent home on-campus.

Arts in Medicine Week was universally regarded as a great success, gaining exposure in the press and on television, and Little Shop of Horrors proved to be one of the highlights of the week - being seen by over 300 audience members. The show also raised money for two charities - "Caring for Kids" in Dundee and the Scottish Centre for the Victims of Torture, assisted by MedSIN.

Since then, the society has evolved into a dramatic and music company which allows student and qualified healthcare professionals the opportunity to become actively involved in amateur productions, despite the time restrictions imposed by a variety of different on-call rotas and shift patterns. We do of course welcome membership from people who do not come from a healthcare background. Our more recent performances have been Cabaret, followed by Return to the Forbidden Planet and Disco Inferno. Details of these productions can be found via our Past Shows page.
