THE OPERATING THEATRE COMPANY

Medical students, doctors, dentists and nurses in Glasgow are getting ready to give up the consulting room for the bright lights of the stage when they take part in Glasgow University's Arts in Medicine Week 2002. Coming together as The Operating Theatre Company, they will present their production of Little Shop of Horrors at the Gilmorehill Theatre, Hillhead, on Thursday 10th and Friday 11th October 2002.

Little Shop of Horrors is a darkly funny musical based on the 1960’s sci-fi movie of the same name. Its hero, Seymour, is the timid employee of a flower shop. His dreary life is spent toiling in the failing shop alongside the lovely but clueless Audrey. Seymour sees the chance to transform his life and win the heart of Audrey when the curious plant he has been nurturing flourishes under his care. Seymour gains the attention of the world and the affections of Audrey via an agreement with the voracious plant. Seymour’s good intentions go awry, however, and he is caught in a frenzy of greed and deception which spirals out of control. The results are hilarious and harrowing.

"People respond well to the show - it dares to be different" explains producer and final year medical student David Doig. "There’s even a psychopathic dentist - a role that's sure to bring a controversial touch to the production!"

Arts in Medicine Week aims to celebrate the opening of Glasgow University's new Medical Faculty Building, the Faculty's first permanent home on-campus. It also hopes to draw attention to the power of the arts to heal, and to bring the public and the medical profession closer together. A cross-section of talented medics - ranging from 2nd year students to senior doctors - is taking part, making this an exciting and high-profile week for Glasgow health professionals. Other events planned include orchestral and choral concerts, art and photography exhibitions, and a piano recital.

Tickets, priced £5-£6, and further information are available from the Gilmorehill G12 Theatre Box Office on 0141 330 5522. Or you can visit the Operating Theatre Company website at www.operatingtheatre.org
